Numbered because the sequence is real

These are not nine features. They are an ordered curriculum sequence — each one assumes the ones above it. Every pillar below says what the idea is, how we use it, and what your child develops as a result.

01The Soviet & Russian training tradition

What it is. A century-old system built on studying complete games, annotating them by hand, and treating the endgame as the foundation rather than the afterthought. We name it because we borrow from it — not because we are affiliated with anyone.

What your child develops. A child learns that chess has a body of knowledge behind it, and that improvement is a documented process rather than a talent you either have or do not.

02Deliberate tactical practice

What it is. Narrow, repeated, spaced. The same twenty forks until they are boring, then the same twenty pins, then both mixed. Not a variety pack of a hundred different puzzles a day.

What your child develops. Pattern recognition that survives pressure. A shape seen three hundred times is found instantly at ten and still found instantly at sixteen.

03Calculation & candidate-move training

What it is. Never one move. Two or three candidates, named out loud, each with the opponent’s best reply attached, then a choice made between them.

What your child develops. The habit that separates a player who knows the rules from a player who is improving — and the single thing we spend the most class time on at every age.

04Guess-the-move — learning from the masters

What it is. A master game is played out one move at a time. The student predicts the next move before it is revealed, and then hears why the master chose differently.

What your child develops. Judgement. It is also the pedagogy behind the “Your move.” board on this website — we hide the answer, you think, then we compare.

05Model games & pattern-based learning

What it is. A small set of games chosen because each one demonstrates a single idea cleanly. Studied properly rather than skimmed by the dozen.

What your child develops. A library of positions a child can reason from. Chess understanding is mostly a very large collection of remembered positions.

06Human analysis before engine analysis

What it is. After a game, the student says what they thought at each turning point. The coach works through it by hand. Only then is an engine opened, to check — never to reveal.

What your child develops. A child who can explain a position. An engine consulted first gives an answer and teaches nothing; consulted last, it confirms or corrects real thinking.

07Endgame precision

What it is. Taught early rather than last. King and pawn, the opposition, rook against a passed pawn, the basic mates — positions with provably correct answers.

What your child develops. Confidence in simplified positions, and the ability to convert a win instead of hoping for one. It is also the fastest area to improve at any level.

08Competition as training, not pressure

What it is. Tournaments are offered, prepared for, and never required. A rated event is treated as a training input with a result attached, not as a verdict on the child.

What your child develops. A player who competes because they want to. Children pushed into rated events before they are ready learn that chess is frightening.

09Preparing for game anxiety & tournament fear

What it is. A staged programme: naming the physical symptoms, a fixed pre-game routine, practice under a clock, low-stakes competition first, and a scripted plan for the hour after a loss.

What your child develops. A child who can play their normal chess in an abnormal room. Nobody else in this market writes about this, and it is the thing parents ask us about most.

Think first. Engine second.

Pillar six, stated as plainly as it deserves. An engine consulted before the thinking has happened gives an answer and teaches nothing. Consulted afterwards, it is the best analysis partner ever built.

The performance cycle

Improvement becomes a cycle, not a guess.

Eight steps, run continuously rather than once. A child is assessed, taught, given deliberate practice, plays real games, analyses them, has a specific weakness diagnosed, is retrained on that one thing, and is then reassessed to check whether it held.

The step most academies skip is the seventh. Diagnosing a weakness and then teaching next week’s syllabus topic anyway is the most common reason a child plateaus while attending classes regularly.

What we measure

Four columns, every month, in writing

These are the four headings on every progress report. None of them is a rating number, because a rating tells you the result and none of the reasons.

Chess development

Tactical recognition, calculation depth, endgame technique, opening understanding. What the child can now do that they could not last month.

Thinking development

Whether candidate moves are compared. Whether the opponent’s threat is checked before a plan is made. Whether a decision is revisited when the position changes.

Learning behaviour

Attention across the session, whether practice is actually happening, response to correction, and how the child works when the coach is not watching.

Competition readiness

Clock handling, nerves, recovery after a loss, and whether a rated event would currently help or harm.

What parents actually receive

A document, not a WhatsApp message

Once a month, in writing, naming specific positions from specific games. It says what your child did well, what they did not, one thing to work on, and what a coach will be doing about it in the next four weeks.

It is the document you would expect if you were paying for coaching in anything else — and in chess it is unusual enough that it is worth saying out loud.

What happens after the mistake

Pillars eight and nine, in practice. This is the part of chess coaching almost nobody writes about, and it is what parents ask us about most.

Name the symptom

Racing heart, blank mind, wanting to move immediately. Children who can name what is happening stop being frightened of it.

A fixed pre-game routine

The same twenty minutes before every game. Routine displaces anxiety more reliably than reassurance does.

Practise under a clock

Nerves are a condition, and you train in the condition. Practising calm in a calm room does very little.

Low stakes first

Internal batch tournaments before rated events. Losing in front of five people you know is the right first step.

A script for after a loss

What is said, by whom, in the hour after a bad result. Agreed in advance with the child and the parent both.

Return to the board

The lost game is analysed like any other — same tone, same routine. That is what makes it survivable.

A child who moved quickly begins to pause.

A child who hid after losing begins asking “where did I go wrong?”

A child who asked for the answer begins saying “can I try one more time?”

None of those is a rating. All three arrive before one does, and all three are what the monthly report is actually tracking.

A method that works for a sixteen-year-old tournament player cannot simply be given to a six-year-old beginner. Everything on this page applies at every level — what changes is the session length, how much is explained versus discovered, how much movement is in the room, and what a coach does in the thirty seconds after a child gets something wrong.

The principle stays rigorous. The teaching stays age-appropriate. The child stays at the centre.

FAQ

Questions about the method

Why publish the whole method? Doesn’t that help your competitors?

Slightly, and it helps parents far more. An academy confident enough to publish its syllabus before being paid is making a checkable claim. One that keeps it hidden until enrolment is asking you to trust that a syllabus exists.

Is this method suitable for a six-year-old?

The principles are the same; the teaching is not. A method that works for a sixteen-year-old tournament player cannot simply be handed to a six-year-old beginner. What changes is session length, how much is explained versus discovered, and how much movement is in the room. What does not change is the six-step loop.

Do you use chess engines at all?

Yes — last. Human analysis before engine analysis is pillar six. The student explains what they thought, the coach works through it by hand, and then the engine confirms or corrects it. Reversing that order removes the part where learning happens.

Do you teach openings?

Opening ideas, not memorised lines. A child who has memorised twelve moves is fine until move thirteen and lost immediately afterwards. Understanding what a position wants transfers; a memorised sequence does not.

What if my child does not want to compete?

Then they do not compete. Roughly a third of our students never play a rated tournament and improve steadily anyway. Competition is one training input among several, not the purpose of the exercise.

Is any of this backed by research?

The chess pedagogy is drawn from established training traditions and from deliberate-practice research, and we cite those honestly. Claims about chess improving school performance, IQ or attention disorders are a different matter: the evidence there is mixed and often weak, and you will not find us making any of them.

How chess is actually taught well

Most chess teaching falls into one of two failure modes. The first is the lecture: a coach explains ideas to a room, the children listen, and very little transfers, because chess understanding is built by doing rather than by hearing. The second is the arcade: children play constantly, nobody analyses anything, and each child spends a year practising their existing habits several hundred times.

A good chess class alternates between the two deliberately. Teach one idea. Play a position that requires it. Stop the clock and ask a question rather than give an answer. Then analyse what actually happened, by hand, out loud, before an engine is consulted. The loop is short, it repeats, and it is what the six chips at the top of this page describe.

Why deliberate practice beats volume

The research on skill acquisition is consistent on one point: the practice that produces improvement is narrow, repetitive, slightly beyond current ability, and immediately corrected. Applied to chess, that means a small pattern set repeated many times rather than a large one skimmed once, and it means feedback arriving within seconds rather than at the end of the week.

It also means that the most common parental instinct — more classes — is usually the wrong lever. Chess improvement happens between the classes. Two sessions a week with fifteen focused minutes on four other days beats four sessions a week with nothing in between, reliably and by a wide margin.

Why we teach endgames early

Endgames are usually taught last, on the reasoning that they are boring and advanced. Both parts of that are wrong. King-and-pawn positions are the only place in chess where a child can be shown a provably correct answer and verify it themselves, which makes them the best available teaching tool for calculation. They are also where games are actually decided once opponents stop hanging pieces.

What we do not claim

You will not find a claim on this website that chess raises IQ, improves school marks, treats attention disorders or makes a child smarter. The evidence for far-transfer from chess to general academic ability is mixed at best, and most of the strong claims in circulation come from studies with serious methodological problems. What chess demonstrably builds is skill at chess, and a set of habits around attention, calculation and handling being wrong that children practise several hundred times a session. That is enough to be worth doing, and it has the advantage of being true.
