Children play real games from the first class, not after eight weeks of theory. Boredom in junior chess almost always comes from too much explaining and not enough playing.
Batches are grouped by level as well as by age. A complete beginner and a child two years in are not put on the same board.

Two sessions a week. Between them: fifteen minutes of puzzles on four days, and two or three slow games against a person.
Six to nine is the age at which spaced repetition of a small pattern set pays the most. Not fifty different puzzles a day — the same twenty forks until they are boring, then the same twenty pins, then both mixed together.
It works because recognition is built by frequency, not difficulty. A child who has seen the same fork shape three hundred times sees it instantly at nine and will still see it instantly at fifteen.
Pieces go missing in positions that were completely fine. A loss produces tears or silence, and the game is never discussed.
A pause appears before the move. The child begins saying what the opponent is threatening — out loud, unprompted — and can tell you afterwards where the game turned.

No. Children join this track at zero regularly. Batches are grouped by level as well as age, so a beginner is not sitting opposite someone two years in.
Then they are in the wrong batch and we will move them. Six to a batch exists precisely so that this is visible in the first fortnight rather than the first term.
Ninety minutes twice a week, and we ask that a physical board sits next to the screen with the position set up on it. Children of this age learn the board better with their hands than with a mouse.
When they ask, or when a coach thinks they will enjoy it — not on a schedule. Most children in this track are ready somewhere in the second year, and some never want to, which is fine.
Six to nine is the easiest age to start chess and the easiest age to teach it badly. Children in this band pick up the rules within two or three sessions and can then happily play for a year without getting any better, because playing reinforces whatever they already do. The job of a class at this age is to interrupt that.
Adults learn chess through principles — control the centre, develop your pieces, castle early. Children of six to nine learn it through pictures. A fork is not a rule to them, it is a shape, and once they have seen that shape often enough they will find it in a position they have never met before. This is why our sessions at this level spend more time on repetition than on explanation, and why the puzzle homework is deliberately narrow rather than varied.
It also explains something parents often find counter-intuitive: a seven-year-old who solves twenty near-identical puzzles is learning faster than one who solves twenty different ones. Variety feels like progress and produces very little of it.
Almost every child of this age loses badly before they lose well. Some cry, some go silent, some sweep the pieces off the board, and a few simply refuse to play again for a fortnight. None of it is unusual and none of it predicts anything about the child.
What we do about it is teach a routine rather than a feeling. After a mistake, the child names what changed, decides what the opponent now threatens, and plays the best move available in the position they are actually in — not the one they wish they were in. It sounds mechanical because it is meant to be. A routine is something a seven-year-old can hold onto when they are upset; “don’t worry about it” is not.
Most children move into Strategic Minds somewhere around ten, when the shift is from recognition to calculation — comparing candidate moves, playing with a clock, and writing down their games. Children who arrive at that stage with the patterns already automatic find it straightforward. Children who arrive having only played a lot of fast games usually spend their first months unlearning the instant-move habit.
